What to Bring and Expect on Digital SAT Test Day

A plain walk through the device rules, the bag, and the morning schedule, as College Board describes them for the Bluebook app.

Sort out the device first

Bluebook, the testing app, does not run on every device. College Board says you can run Bluebook on a Windows laptop or tablet, a Mac laptop, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook. It also says you can't run it on a personal Chromebook, mobile phone, Linux, or PureOS device.

Timing matters here. College Board says to download the app at least 30 days before test day, in case your first choice of device doesn’t meet the requirements. Borrowing is also possible. If approved to borrow a device from College Board, you'll need to arrive 30 minutes early on test day to sign in and complete exam setup.

Bluebook must be the only application running during the test. For SAT Weekend or AP Exams, College Board says to memorize your College Board account credentials, and adds that you can’t test without them and Bluebook won’t save them. Ask your teen to say their login out loud without looking at a screen.

What goes in the bag

Start with the ticket and the ID. College Board describes the ticket as your up-to-date admission ticket from the Bluebook app, and says bringing a printed ticket is preferred. You can access the ticket after completing exam setup (available starting 5 days before the test). The photo ID must be acceptable, and College Board says this must be a physical document, not electronic. Print the ticket and put it with the ID the night before.

Power comes next. College Board lists a power cord and/or a portable charger, and states that it cannot guarantee you’ll have access to an outlet during testing. It adds that your device should be able to hold a charge for 3-4 hours. The device must be fully charged and will need to stay on for roughly 3 hours. Your device must also be able to connect to the provided school or test center Wi-Fi.

For writing, bring a pencil or pen. Scratch paper will be provided, and College Board says do not bring your own. An external keyboard is on the list if you use one, and you can only use external keyboards with tablets, not laptops. Epinephrine auto-injectors (like EpiPens) are permitted without the need for accommodations, and they must be placed in a clear bag and stored under your desk during testing.

Arrival and the testing morning

Test centers open at 7:45 a.m. and doors close at 8 a.m. unless otherwise noted on your admission ticket. You can't be admitted once testing has started. College Board also says to arrive at your test center 15 minutes before your test begins for check-in. If you're late or absent on test day, you'll need to register again, and the standard testing fees will apply. Read the ticket for any note about the door time.

Once testing begins, students will have one 10-minute break during the test between test sections. You can take an unscheduled break if you need to, but you'll lose testing time. If your submission fails for any reason, you'll have time after the test to complete your submission, and all your work will be saved to your device. You must resubmit by the end of the following day.

SAT School Day has its own short list: an approved photo ID if you’re testing somewhere other than your regular school, and your fully charged device unless your school is giving you one on test day.

Try the app before the real day

Bluebook includes a test preview, a short set of questions that lets you experience digital testing and try out the tools. You won't receive scores or any feedback on your answers, and the test preview is untimed.

Full-length practice tests are scored. After you complete a digital practice test in Bluebook, you can view and download your scores in My Practice, review questions, analyze your performance, and get targeted practice through Khan Academy. Use the same device and charger for practice that your teen plans to use on test day, and note anything that behaves oddly while there is still time to fix it.

How we apply this. OC Study offers mock exams with real timing and module structure, along with a mistake journal for reviewing missed questions.
